Fruity popcorn balls recipe

These popcorns balls are a yummy reminder of childhood holiday traditions.Popcorn balls are a crispy, crunchy treat that many of us associate with the holiday season. As a kid, I was delighted when my trick or treat bag contained homemade popcorn balls. I also loved getting them at our class Christmas parties when I was in grade school. Concerns over food safety has led many to stop making and sharing these time honored traditions. If you are like me and want to revive this taste of childhood, this recipe is a great place to start.

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 small box Jello-o
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 10 cups plain popped popcorn
Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Grease a 9X13 baking dish well with butter, add popcorn and set aside. Grease a saucepan well with butter and add butter, Jell-O water and corn syrup. Stir the mixture often as it comes to a rolling boil. Boil for 4 minutes then remove from heat and stir in baking soda. Pour mixture over the popcorn and stir well to coat. Bake for 15 minutes then stir before baking for 15 more minutes. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before forming into balls.
Cook's Notes:
  • I have tried many types of popcorn when making this recipe and Kroger brand natural microwave popcorn has worked the best.
  • You will want to butter your hands before forming the popcorn balls to keep the mixture from sticking to your hands.
  • If possible, have a second person help you form the balls as the mixture cools quickly and can become difficult to work with.
  • If you don't want to make balls, allow the popcorn to cool completely before breaking it into bite size pieces.
