Several weight loss companies settle lawsuit with FTC over deceptive claims

Weight loss marketers Sense, L'Occitane, HCG Diet Direct and LeanSpa LLC have settled a lawsuit brought by the FTC over deceptive advertising claims. The companies have agreed to pay $34 million in consumer redress and stop claims future claims that their products help with weight loss. The companies may make the claim only if it is supported by two adequate, well controlled human studies. In addition to the lawsuit, the FTC has also sent letters to 75 broadcasters requesting that they voluntarily screen ads that may be deceptive and hopes to educate the media with a reference guide that was recently launched online. This is the second largest deceptive advertising settlement in FTC history.
